New pilot encourages digital tech pathways

Today, we proudly announce a brand new pilot, showcasing tech careers for the next generation. The Ministry of Education and NZTech have partnered to host Tech21, to inspire ākonga (learners) into technology careers.  

The Tech21 Summit on 24 May at the Vodafone Events Centre in Manukau has a number of young entrepreneurs and digital disruptors sharing their stories with more than a thousand 12 to 14 year olds to inspire them into a career in tech. The event will feature digital disruptor Amber Taylor, social entrepreneur Shay Wright, KidsCoin co-founder Brittany Teei, @girlbossnz founder Alexia Hilbertidou and more. Plus, a special performance by Kings, live at Tech21!  

Today, I am in Wellington spending time with sister organisations IT Professionals, NZRise and InternetNZ as we continue to drive the Digital Industry Transformation Plan (ITP). Working with the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) we should have a draft plan ready in a couple of weeks. Keep up to date with the progress on the Digital ITP website.

This afternoon we will also be meeting with Dr David Clark, the Minister for the Digital Economy, discussing ITP priority opportunities and the work the Government has started on a national digital strategy.

Meanwhile, the Government has been working hard to adapt the R&D tax incentive to ensure more software development is eligible. Check out their recent update on eligible activities. Likewise, the Government’s New Zealand Growth Capital Partners have also been busy, committing $14 million from the Elevate NZ Venture Fund into the Finistere Aotearoa Fund which will target Series A and B funding for New Zealand agritech companies.

This Tuesday, I will be attending the Auckland launch of NZHIT’s report on the opportunities for New Zealand HealthTech, Enabling a healthier Aotearoa New Zealand. This research highlights the massive opportunities for New Zealand from healthtech, both for the health system and export growth. 

The rest of the week will be a mix of meetings and school holiday fun!
