Celebrating edtech

Kia ora,

The highlight of last week was presenting Shanon O’Connor of Tōnui Collab with the 2024 Community Tech Champions Award at the CIO Summit Awards.

Tōnui Collab, an EdTechNZ member, is a specialist STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths and Mātauranga Māori) education partner. They are committed to digital equity and strengthening the opportunities for taitamariki to contribute in meaningful ways to the success of Aotearoa’s tech sector. It does this by removing barriers and improving accessibility so that rangatahi can thrive in tech and not be left behind in the digital divide. Congratulations Shanon and team, awesome work!

Last week, Kiwi edtech Kami announced an investment by US private equity firm BV Investment Partners, valuing the company at $300 million. This is another great example of the mutual value generated via a strong NZ Inc support system. This has provided the Government funding agency NZGCP a 75-fold return! Congratulations to Jordan Thoms, Alliv Samson and Hengjie Wang. Listen to our See Tomorrow First Podcast and learn more about Kami’s journey.

NZTech and AgriTechNZ have both submitted feedback on the Government’s second emissions reduction plan (ERP2). Our key message is that the plan is still very light on tech! Technology continues to be a critical enabler for addressing New Zealand’s response to climate change, as detailed in our recent Framework for a Climate Technology Roadmap report.

In other news, nominations for the IoT Alliance close on 2 September and BlockchainNZ election results will be announced on 28 August. Voting for BioTechNZ’s Executive Council is now open.

Ngā mihi nui
