Kia ora,

April brings change in many forms – not just shorter days and falling leaves from our deciduous trees. For business it’s not only a new trading quarter and for some a new financial year, but also the arrival of policy exposure drafts from Government agencies that sometimes stack three, four or five deep. This is hard enough for people or organisations, but for consensus-driven community/industry groups it is quite daunting. I’ve always found it strange that while agencies recognise the value of group responses, additional time for the process is not afforded to them by default. However, it’s great that most agencies do so when approached. You know who you are, so thank you!

Over a third of DINZ’s 100 strong membership (a warm welcome to ABCorp, Co-operative Bank and RBNZ our newest members) participate in the DISTF Working Group where a draft response to the targeted consultation on the final revision of the Trust Framework Rules is well underway. Additionally, responses to OPC’s Biometrics code exposure draft are being initaited in the DINZ Biometrics Special Interest Group. The Regulatory & Policy sub committee of DINZ’s Exec Council ran out of time to provide an initial response to the Commerce Commission’s Personal Banking Services Market Study regarding the roadblocks that might impede the June 2026 milestone recommendation for banks to participate in the Digital Identity framework as credential providers. The closing dates for all these initiatives are very similar. In a nutshell, that’s our mahi mountain for the next four weeks. This last one reminds me just how often digital identity is raised these days. Look at the FintechNZ Deloitte Pulsecheck and HorizonPoll as further examples. This great post from DINZ member IDVerse indicates it’s similar across the Tasman.

Earlier this month, Health NZ treated us to a great lunchtime webinar followed by the joint DINZ – Payments NZ members digital identity investigative sprint, which commenced with an orientation webinar last week. We had 80 on the call! This sprint serves as a prelude to a workshop next month to surface the digital identity related issues that people encounter in the payments industry. The goal is to develop best practice requirements to overcome these issues as part of PaymentsNZ’s Next Generation Payments programme.

On Tuesday 7 May, I’ll be at the NZ Government Data Summit moderating a panel with DINZ members MyMahi, MoE and DIA. DIA is up next at DINZ on Tuesday 14 May as it walks us through the Digital Identity Services Trust Framework and how it supports safe and effective digital identity services in Aotearoa.
