Creating a better tomorrow
Every week, NZTech members continue to reach out to me stressing that skills shortages are still the number one issue facing their businesses. NZTech and IT Professionals (our sister association, representing individuals in the tech sector) have both been working for several years with members and the Government on multiple ways to improve access to critical tech skills.
As the Government develops its post-COVID immigration policy we are working closely to ensure New Zealand firms are able to attract and access the best talent from around the world. Later this year, when the new Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) is launched, we recommend a simple system that can be processed rapidly. Right now, those urgently needing a visa to bring in critical tech skills can apply for one of 600 Border Exceptions. We have also been working hard to promote New Zealand’s tech sector to attract talent via the Tech Story initiative, We See Tomorrow First.
Ensuring we have the right digital skills in New Zealand requires a blend of international and home grown talent. Earlier this year, NZTech and IT Professionals merged our various school programmes to make it easier to find ways to encourage young Kiwis into tech careers. TechHub brings together initiatives like ShadowTech (students/teachers spend a day in a tech firm), TechHub Talks(tech professionals going into schools), Tahi Rua Toru Tech (a national tech competition) and CodeClub (after school club). While skills shortages do keep us busy, NZTech has many other important programmes of work underway. If you are considering the R&D Tax Incentive (RDTI) sector specific guidelines are now available.

Following stakeholder feedback, Inland Revenue and Callaghan Innovation have collaborated to produce Digital Technology specific guidelines for the Research and Development Tax Incentive (RDTI).
