NZTech Inform – staying connected
This time last week, who would have imagined that we would be back in lockdown? Lockdown is challenging in so many ways, whether you are an essential worker or at home trying to work and look after kids, at home with work on hold, or in a bubble of one, or living with flatmates.
Whatever your situation, your priority should be taking care of yourself. Sir John Kirwin’s Mentemia shared seven ways to manage wellbeing. This includes staying connected, plus asking for a break from the news and social media!
During the coming weeks we will all be online, more than usual. Last week, Netsafe reminded us that we will all rely more on the internet. Mostly it will be positive, but we know it is a time when criminals are more active and online problems increase. Netsafe is available seven days a week and offers free advice. CERT also encourages everyone to report COVID-19 vaccine scams and misinformation. It’s important we all keep safe online and in our bubbles.
For those of us working from home, it’s not strictly business as usual. We’re at home, during a crisis, trying to work! So, be kind to yourself and others.
This week, most of my meetings have transitioned to Zoom calls. This includes a meeting with the Ministry of Social Development on a project we are collaborating on to help young Pasifika women onto pathways into tech careers; the regular monthly tech sector catch up with the GCDO team at the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA); a meeting with the Ministry of Education regarding their digital and data strategy and an Executive Council meeting with Digital Identity NZ. I will be finishing the week with the DIA, going through their plans for supporting the Skills Workstream in the Digital Tech Industry Transformation Plan (ITP).
I am also hosting a Zoom with Minister Clark and CEO’s from some of New Zealand’s largest software firms, so he can hear first hand the implications of the current border settings on local employment and economic growth.
