NZTech Update – Collaboration that’s good for the world!

I love it when we all work together as NZ Inc! When I returned home from Europe four years ago, I was amazed at how fragmented the New Zealand business, Government and not-for-profit ecosystem was. Following research that found 66 tech industry groups individually trying to engage with Government, NZTech was formed in 2009. There are probably still 50 or so tech groups out there, but more of them are connected within the New Zealand Tech Alliance, sharing resources and members.
The Tech Alliance now brings together the 21 largest tech associations and there are another three currently onboarding. The Alliance is funded by over 800 paying members who together employ more than 10% of the New Zealand workforce.
Now that the New Zealand tech ecosystem is collaborating more effectively, there are increasingly more examples of tech and Government working together. The aim is always to help grow the tech economy while using tech to make New Zealand more inclusive and prosperous.
Techweek, a festival of innovation that’s good for the world, is an excellent collaboration with the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE), and other agencies like New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE), Callaghan and the Ministry of Education. The development of a New Zealand tech story and a marketing campaign to help position New Zealand as tech innovators is another great collaboration with NZTE, NZ Story and MBIE. The development of Scale-Up New Zealand, a platform for profiling and connecting tech firms with capital and support is the third major tech ecosystem collaboration with the Government, this time with Callaghan Innovation.
All of these projects are at relatively early stages however, just by working closely, we are beginning to experience the power of a more connected ecosystem and one strong message to the world from New Zealand. New Zealand tech and innovation is ‘good for the world’.
